Menopossibilities & midlife women at work, it’s time to dare differently

Aug 25, 2022
Menopause, midlife, women, work

Here’s the anomaly.

A recent piece by Smart Company said age diversity is the key to solving staff shortages post-COVID and menopause age women are the fastest growing demographic in Australia today, more than 1.2 million of them in fact. One solves the other, access to an untapped talent.

Yet more than 50% of companies are reluctant to hire these same women to join their workforces. They’re skilled, experienced, reliable, committed & knowledgeable.

What’s not to like?

But take heed, these women are not pushovers. They’ve had years of taking care of other people – husbands, kids, families, parents, friends – in fact, anyone that’s just not themselves. Well now they’re changing those priorities in their droves and are not afraid to throw the towel in on a crap employer or a lousy husband. Enough is enough.

So whilst their estrogen levels might be lower, so are their oxytocin levels and what this means is that menopausal women are biologically less concerned about keeping the peace and relentlessly meeting the needs of kids, bosses and peers. They are ready to ruffle some feathers and create some positive change. We call that menopossibility.

Western societies don’t hold age in high regard like the wise Asian community do, and that’s a mistake.

We start to make our older workforce, especially women, feel that they’re not worth as much as the subliminal messages sink in and so does the self doubt. Not for all women though.

With menopossibility women can learn how to positively reframe this powerful, natural, and ultimately transformative stage of life. It’s the most powerful time of life to unlock opportunities that boost clarity, self-belief and the impact of that. A time to find themselves. A new and different version of who they were.

I had to find that new version when I hit menopause early at 44 and at the height of my big corporate career. So when Laini Bennett MBA, asked me to be a guest on her leadership blog, Birds of a Feather - it was a no brainer. Women need to dare to do things differently and by educating and empowering women to pursue their life goals they can be the inspirational leaders we want and need. It resonated perfectly for me.

So if you’re one of the 50% women that are not being listened to, one of the 1 in 10 women that are thinking about quitting their job because of the impact of menopause, one of the 1.2 million valuable employees that are being ignored right now, then you need to read this because you’ll see that anything is possible. If I can do it you can do it.

What are your top 3 leadership lessons so far?
