Midlife woman with 1-hour spare protects her health and career

It’s mid-summer in Minneapolis (no that’s not Fargo), in 2010 and I am flying to Cincinnati, Ohio for work. I had plenty of snacks. I learned the hungry-way that US airlines are no Qantas. As we land, the pilot announces there is a tornado incoming. Disaster is literally descending. We go straight to the bottom level of the airport and “wait it out”. By the time I emerge it’s dark. A rental car, no Google maps, an Aussie driving in the US and a tornado. What could possibly go wrong? I couldn’t read the map. I had no idea where I was going and the wind was blowing my tiny car around the (wrong side of) the road. Somehow, sometime later, I make it. Work-travel returns to normal with the loud rattling of the Marriot Hotel circa 1970’s air conditioning.

What’s the moral of this story? Prepare for the worst and hope for the best. Don’t try and navigate the muddle of menopause, work and life all on your own. Prepare for it by joining a community like ours so that you have your own map (that works for you), together with a cheer-squad, a bunch of on-demand experts and an action plan.
